Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will give a guest lecture on the political situation in Belarus
On 18 November, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will visit the University of Tartu, where she will meet with the rector and the Minister of Education and Research and give a guest lecture “Belarus after 2020: Dictatorship vs. European Future” at 15:00 in the White Hall of the UT Museum.
This year’s recipients of honorary decorations have been announced
On 21 November, at 16:00, Rector Toomas Asser presents the university’s honorary decorations at the ceremony in the assembly hall. All university members are welcome to be there to congratulate their colleagues.
This year, 77 people are recognised with the University of Tartu honorary decorations. The University of Tartu Grand Medal, the highest award granted to university members, is presented to Urmas Varblane, Professor of International Business, member of the University of Tartu council and member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Professor Varblane is an outstanding economist whose contribution extends beyond the conventional scope of academic work. He has served as a bridge between universities and entrepreneurship, making a direct impact on both public policy-making and corporate strategies.
In addition to the Grand Medal, the rector also presents the University of Tartu Medals, the Badges of Distinction and the decorations “100 Semesters at the University of Tartu”. See all recipients of the honorary decorations.
Come to Blood Donor Day on 26 November!
The University of Tartu and the Blood Centre of Tartu University Hospital invite the university family to a blood donor day on Tuesday, 26 November, from 10:30 to 15:00 at the Delta Centre.
Filmo-Ugri movie nights
This autumn, the Filmo-Ugric movie nights series will start at the University of Tartu, organized by the student representatives of the Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics of UT. Films about Finno-Ugric culture and linguistics are shown on the last Thursday of every month.
The first movie night will take place on 28 November at 18:00 in Jakobi 2-226, circular hall. The film “Sami blood” will be introduced by digital linguistics lecturer Joshua Wilbur, who is also involved in Pite Sami language research. See you at the movie nights!
‘Estonian culture in and for Europe’ film night at Elektriteater
In cooperation with Anna Hints, the University of Tartu is organising an evening of film and discussion which will take place from 17:00–21:00 on 12 December. The event will include screenings of the documentary Ordinary Life about European culture, which was produced as part of the Camino project, and the films Smoke Sauna Sisterhood and Sauna Day, followed by a discussion with Anna Hints.
Guest lecture about the impact of Hungarian innovators on the world
University of Tartu will host a guest lecture on 13 November about the impact of Hungarian innovators on the world. Ágnes Kollár, Lecturer for Hungarian Language and Culture at the University of Hamburg’s Institute for Finno-Ugric and Uralic Studies, will walk us through the remarkable inventions Hungarian innovators have brought to the world.

Hungarian dance evening welcomes students
The next autumnal Hungarian dance evening will take place on 16 November at 18:00 in the Tiigi club house. Everyone is welcome to dance! Both beginners and advanced dancers are welcome!
PAUS(E) – A Relaxing Wellness Event at the University of Tartu Academic Sports Club!
Come and enjoy a day focused on physical and mental well-being! PAUS(E) is a new wellness event offering an opportunity to step out of the fast pace of daily life and experience the benefits of relaxing exercises to balance academic work. If possible, please bring your own yoga mat.
The event will take place on 17 November from 11:00 to 15:00 in the University of Tartu Sports Hall (Ujula 4), participation fee is 7 euros.

Free adaptation training for newly arrived international students
Integration Foundation invites people who have arrived in Estonia on the basis of regular migration less than 5 years ago (e.g. who hold a residence permit for work, study, to visit a family member, or EU citizens) to the trainings of adaptation programme 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚!
We offer adaptation trainings on 6 different topics (modules) – basic, work, business, studying, research and family life. At the moment basic and work module trainings are available for registration. We are gradually opening new groups of each topic module. We also offer free Estonian language courses on levels A1 – B1. Additional information and registration.
All training sessions are free for participants. To view courses and register, please create an account or log in to your existing account on the Settle in Estonia programme website. The adaptation programme is co-funded by the European Union and state budget funds.
Participate in a study on brand attitudes and perceptions
Vishal Pardessi is conducting a study for his thesis that focuses on assessing the brand attitudes and perceptions of Generation Z across Estonia. The data collected will help understand how this demographic relates to brands and their overall perception in today’s digital environment. Please respond to the survey by the end of today, 28 October. The survey is in English.

Participate in the Food Hackathon!
Tartu Biotechnology Park, the Centre of Estonian Rural Research and Knowledge (METK), and the Food and Fermentation Technology Development Centre (TFTAK) are organising the Food Hachathon. This hackathon addresses real-world problems linked to the food supply chain, sustainability, and creating solutions that could be implemented in real life. The goal of the hackathon is to create potential business solutions in a short amount of time using design thinking methods, combining academic excellence and specific industry knowledge.
Who should apply? Students, researchers, entrepreneurs, food and agriculture sector employees, and anyone interested in contributing to the sustainable future of the food system is invited to come up with innovative solutions to important challenges in the agriculture and food sectors.

›› Come celebrate the 392th anniversary of the University of Tartu
On 25 October, the 392nd anniversary of the founding of the University of Tartu is celebrated.
At 16:45, flowers are placed at the monument to Johan Skytte, the founder of the idea of the university and the first chancellor of the University of Tartu, and at the monument to King Gustavus II Adolphus.
At 18:00, there is a concert “When Academia Gustaviana was founded” in the university assembly hall. Ken Ird, Research Secretary of the UT Museum, talks about the founding of the University of Tartu, and the Rondellus ensemble performs love songs and dances from England and Italy from the era the university was founded, on baroque instruments and in period costumes. The concert is free.

›› Dark Matter Week Aims to Get Closer to the Cosmic Mystery
From 29 October to 5 November, we are celebrating Dark Matter Week at the university with public lectures to get closer to cosmic mysteries. In honor of this, an art and photography exhibition by Kärt Summatavet, Navitrolla, and Maret Einasto will also open in November at the Tartu Observatory in Tõravere.

The lobby of the library underwent renovations this summer. More comfortable seating areas were added on the ground floor, and the whole lobby became more functional. The priority was to create a secure yet attractive and convenient working and learning environment. Read the news.

›› “Harmonia Universitatis” concerts to continue in the new academic year
The concert “180 years from Clara Schumann’s concerts in Tartu”, which will take place on 11 October at 18:00 in the university assembly hall, is a continuation of the concert series “Harmonia Universitatis”. The concert is free for all schoolchildren and students.
›› Think along: how societal trends affect the university’s future
The strategic planning committee invites all students to have their say in the development of the university’s new strategic plan. The university’s new strategic plan will be drawn up for ten years up to 2035. It will include a limited number of strategic focus areas where the university wants to achieve a leap forward in development and improve the quality and impact of its activities. The focus areas do not concentrate on individual research fields but on cross- and interdisciplinary themes.
Based on a trend analysis carried out by the Centre for Applied Social Sciences (CASS), the committee has formulated 16 macro trends that will likely influence the university over the next decade. We invite students to complete the questionnaire by 13 October and consider how these societal trends will affect the university’s future.
A summary of the responses will be forwarded to the University of Tartu Student Union, who will provide input to the committee to formulate the focus areas of the university’s new strategic plan.

›› Inspiration week on AI
The UT working group on AI in teaching invites students to an inspiration week on AI! Please fill in the registration form to participate.
The event takes place on 18 October at 14:30-16:00 at the Jakobi 2 lecture hall. Annette Vee (University of Pittsburgh) will give a presentation and a workshop to the students, focusing on
- the opportunities and limitations of generative AI in learning
- and providing practical recommendations for its use.
The same workshop will be held on 16 October at 14:30-16:00 at the Viljandi Culture Academy (Posti 1-319).
›› The project is looking for interviewees with higher education who have Estonian roots and have lived abroad for at least four consecutive years.
Kendra Kabanen is a 3rd year digital product design student at the Estonian Academy of Arts. They are currently working on a service design project in co-operation with the Integration Foundation and are looking for interviewees who:
- have acquired higher education at least at BA level;
- are from Estonia / have Estonian roots;
- have at least 4 years of consecutive residence abroad.
The aim of the interviews is to map the return journey of high-educated Estonians who have lived abroad and to define the problems they have encountered along the way. The aim of the project is to find solutions to the problems of the returnees, which could be implemented by the Integration Foundation in their services.

›› Webinar about misinformation
On 20, 23 and 24 September, Andreas Ventsel and Mari-Liis Madisson from the University of Tartu’s Department of Semiotics, along with other colleagues participating in the Erasmus+ project “S.HI.E.L.D. vs Disinfo” (2023–2025), will organise a webinar to share the initial project results. The project focuses on developing the necessary skills to combat misinformation in digital media. It also involves advancing the teaching of critical digital literacy by creating theoretical frameworks and practical solutions for developing new courses in European higher education institutions.
The webinar is intended for students, educators, and researchers and will provide valuable insights and practical techniques for addressing the growing challenge of disinformation.

At the three-minute thesis competition you can put your presentation skills to the test, talk about your research in a different way than usual and gain a wider audience for your work. Presentations are invited from all fields of research in Estonian or English. The best presenters will receive cash prizes and an opportunity to represent the university in follow-up competitions.
Important dates:
• Register by 19 September. Fill in the registration form in Estonian or English, depending on the language of your presentation.
• On 24 September from 16–18, all doctoral students can attend a practical training course in English conducted by pitching expert Maret Ahonen.
• This year’s competition takes place on Wednesday, 2 October in the University of Tartu Library Conference Hall. Everyone is welcome to listen to the presentations! Further information.
›› Nominate candidates for the university’s honorary decoration
All university members are invited to nominate candidates who deserve to be awarded the university’s honorary decoration for their outstanding achievements. Nominations can be submitted via the web form until 20 September. When you submit the proposal, please enter the candidate’s name and briefly describe why the person should receive the decoration.
The senate decides the awarding of the Grand Medal at its October meeting. The rector decides the awarding of the Medal, the Badge of Distinction and the decoration “100 Semesters at the University of Tartu” immediately after the same meeting of the senate.
Recipients of honorary decorations will be announced on 25 October 2024.
Presentation of the honorary decorations will take place on 21 November 2024 at 16:00 in the assembly hall of the main building. The entire university family is welcome to attend!

›› Public lecture by professor Jeff McMahan and presentation of the special issue of Studia Philosophica Estonica
On 5 September, one of the world’s leading moral philosophers, Professor Jeff McMahan from the University of Oxford will give a public lecture on the ethics of killing and just war theory. His lecture also marks the publication of a special issue of Studia Philosophica Estonica special issue: “Reflections on the Russia-Ukraine war”. The event is held from 16:00 to 18:00 in White Hall at the University of Tartu Museum.
Professor McMahan will challenge traditional just war theory, offering a revisionist perspective that questions the moral permissibility of any Russian military action in Ukraine. He will explore the ethical implications for Ukraine’s defensive strategies, particularly the need to avoid escalation to nuclear conflict. McMahan will also examine the moral responsibilities of civilians in wartime, focusing on the ethics of targeting Russian civilians during the ongoing conflict.

On Saturday, 7 September at 18:00, a joint concert called EUROTUUR will take place at the Tartu Song Festival arena, featuring performances by 5MIINUST & Puuluup, with special guest Windows95man. More detailed information about the concert can be found on the EUROTOUR website.
The company PS Music Agency is offering students a discounted opportunity to purchase tickets for EUROTOUR. The current ticket price is 25 euros (30 euros on-site), and there is a special price of 20 euros for University of Tartu students (password/ligipääsukood: tartuülikool).

›› Information Technology Office invites you to try the IT helpdesk virtual assistant
Starting from 16 August, all staff and students of the university will be able to test the virtual assistant on the University of Tartu IT wiki page, which will provide support in solving IT problems based on existing guides. The trial period will last a couple of months, during which the Information Technology Office will be able to assess the quality of the virtual assistant service.
A virtual assistant is an artificial intelligence-based chatbot that is trained to answer questions according to the guides on the IT helpdesk wiki pages. For example, the questions fed to the assistant may concern Outlook setup, printing or the first login of a new student to the university’s online environments.

Would you like to sing in Estonian song festival? Ziemeļu Balsis is an international choir that operates in two cities – Tartu and Tallinn. They describe themselves as a fun bunch – students, medical professionals, event organisers, IT specialists etc. Some have huge singing experience, and some just learned to sing in choir with them.
