Scholarships and allowances

Scholarships are a good way to fund studies and are open to a wide range of students. Besides governmental scholarships and allowances there is a number of non-governmental scholarships one can apply for.

March 25 – March 31

Need-based study allowance

Need-based study allowance can be applied during the entire semester, the amount of the allowance is from 150 to 440 euros per month. Allowance is payed from the month of application (not retroactively) until the end of the semester.

The 2024 Nadia Walter Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to support the doctoral candidates and young scientists of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tartu whose research is focused on nervous diseases, in particular neurodegenerative diseases. Doctoral students and young researchers in the field of medical sciences of the University of Tartu whose research topic is nervous diseases, especially neurodegenerative diseases, can apply for the scholarship. Deadline to Apply: April 1st 2024.

The 2024 Fund of XRP Ledger Trust Scholarship (spring semester)

The purpose of the Fund is to support technology development or legal and regulatory frameworks for governance and sustainability. The scholarship aims to advance understanding of decentralised technologies' potential to solve complex problems. When applying a written essay has to be attached to the application. All Bachelor's and Master's level students  of the University of Tartu can apply for the scholarship regardless of field of study. Deadline to Apply: April 15th 2024. 

The 2024 Voldemar Siimon Memorial Scholarship

The Voldemar Siimon Memorial Scholarship aims to support the studies and self-improvement of successful students of Ethnology or Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics at the University of Tartu. Deadline to Apply: May 1st 2024 (inclusive). More info here.

Need-based study allowance

Need-based study allowance can be applied during the entire semester, the amount of the allowance is from 150 to 440 euros per month. Allowance is payed from the month of application (not retroactively) until the end of the semester.

Estophilus scholarship

The purpose of Estophilus scholarship is to support the Estonia-specific research of students enrolled in universities abroad and of international researchers interested in the Estonian language and culture (in Estonia). The Estophilus scholarship may be applied for by the foreign nationals final year BA students, master’s students, PhD students and post-doctorate researchers from universities abroad while staying in Estonia for conducting research or collecting material about Estonia for 1-5 months. The Estonian language proficiency is an advantage but not a requirement. The research plan has to focus on topics related to Estonia in specific. 

An application round of the EKKAV program for the spring semester of the 2023/24 academic year is open. The grant application period is 21.02.2024–21.03.2024. The application period is ongoing from February 21th until March 21th (Estonian time). More info here.

Scholarships for summer and winter Estonian language courses

The scholarship for attending Estonian language and culture summer/winter courses can be applied for by all the international university students interested in the Estonian language and culture who are studying or have previously studied Estonian. The applicant has to be enrolled at a foreign university at the time of applying (BA, MA or PhD student).An application round of the EKKAV program for the spring semester of the 2023/24 academic year is open. The purpose of the Fund is to support female students who are studying for their Bachelor or Master degrees at the Institute of Computer Science of the University of Tartu (students on the joint Master’s programme and Master’s programs in English with other universities responsible for admissions are excluded from the scope of the Fund). Deadline to Apply: March the 10th 2024.

The Voldemar Siimon Memorial Scholarship aims to support the studies and self-improvement of successful students of Ethnology or Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics at the University of Tartu. When awarding a scholarship, the scholarship committee will consider the applicant's academic achievements, professional performance, and social activities. Under other equal conditions, the scholarship committee may prefer students who were born and raised in Saaremaa. Deadline to Apply: May 1st 2024 (inclusive).

The application for spring semester governmental stipends is ending

Specialisation stipend (IT curricula specialisation stipend) application needs to be submitted in SIS (ÕIS) between February 1 and February 29. The amount of the stipend is from 240 to 300 euros per month.
Achievement stipend application needs to be submitted in SIS (ÕIS) between February 1 and February 29. The amount of the achievement stipend is 100 euros per month.
Need-based study allowance can be applied in the Estonian education portal haridusportaal.edu.ee during the entire semester and need-based special allowance can be applied at the University of Tartu starting from 11th date of month. The amount of need-based study allowance is from 150 to 440 euros per month and special allowance 135 euros per month. The limit of income per family member has changed from January 2024, the new limit for being eligible for the allowance is 756,38 euros per family member monthly.

Estonian governmental stipends cannot be applyed from University of Tartu by the students who study at programmes coordinated by other university.
 

Scholarships for the Ukrainian students in spring semester 2024

Ukrainian students of the University of Tartu (UT) can apply for two different stipends for the spring semester 2024. Here below you can find the application information for both stipends:

  1. UT Financial Support for Ukrainian students – application deadline March 1, 2024;
  2. UT Foundations Scholarship for Ukraine – application deadline March 15, 2024.

Please note that if eligible, you can apply for both stipends. Also, the students applying or receiving need-based study allowance paid by the Ministry of Education and Research can apply for UT Foundations Scholarship.

The Scholarship is granted to support successful studies. The Tartu Raefond scholarship supports students' research papers or essays that deal with the challenges of Tartu and/or developments related to the city in the context of the UN's sustainable development goals. Deadline to Apply: April 1st 2024.

Scholarship for students with special needs

The amount of the scholarship depends on the degree of severity and type of the disability (60–510 euros) and it can be applied until February 22.

University of Tartu Scholarship for Ukraine

The University of Tartu is establishing a scholarship fund to collect and mediate funds to support the studies of talented and active students with Ukrainian citizenship and very good academic performance at the University of Tartu. The scholarship is eligible to students at the University of Tartu with Ukrainian citizenship, who are studying based on the study programmes of first and second level of higher education, and whose studies are taking place in Estonia, except when they have been admitted to study abroad. Application deadline: March 15, 2024.

The 2024 Professor Peeter Tulviste prize

The purpose of the memorial fund is to recognize and value research activities among the teaching staff, research workers and students of the University of Tartu and in society as a whole. The recipient of the prize must be a person up to 40 years of age (who has a master's or doctoral degree) studying or working at the University of Tartu, whose research has made a significant contribution to the understanding of man’s cultural nature. The prize is awarded for high-level research work published in the previous three years. Deadline to Apply: January the 15th 2024. More info here.

The 2023 Anni Jürine Scholarship

The scholarship is composed of money donated to the foundation by the founders of the scholarship (Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics of the University of Tartu, OÜ Keelekord, MTÜ Eesti Kognitiivse Keeleteaduse Ühing, NB! Write (Nordic and Baltic Network for Writing in Higher Education), Anni’s family, colleagues and friends). The scholarship is awarded to one or two bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral students at the University of Tartu to promote research on Anni’s research topics. Deadline to Apply: January 15th 2024. Kristjan Jaak short study visits

The scholarships for short-term study related visits abroad, including participation in conferences, working in libraries, using laboratories, work with an academic supervisor, participation in continuing education courses, consultations and summer schools. Support is granted for the study visits lasting up to one month (30 days). The short study visit may not start earlier than one month after the application deadline. Next deadline December 1.
